Les' 5 Essentials for Ultra-Trail Australia Pace 22

Les' 5 Essentials for Ultra-Trail Australia Pace 22

I’ve been trying to maintain some consistent training for next month’s Shotover Moonlight Mountain Marathon in Queenstown, New Zealand and whilst I may not be the world’s most reliable trainer, I know the equipment I use won’t me down.

1 - Black Diamond Distance FLZ Trekking Poles

‘Don’t knock it ‘til you’ve tried it’, is all I say to people who don’t believe in trekking poles. Biomechanically, they turn you into a four-legged animal and make climbing much easier. Black Diamond’s intuitive design features the Z-Pole Rapid Deployment System and FlickLock adjustability, so you can deploy or stow your poles quickly and easily. They’re also available in a carbon version.

2 - Salomon S-Lab Sense Ultra 5 Set SS17

This 3L hydration vest from Salomon is just right! The stripped-back design of this pack means you hardly know it’s there but it retains the carrying capacity you need for a full day on the trail. I’ve been using this model from Salomon’s vaunted S-Lab range this past year and it’s superb.

3 - Endura Optimizer

With one gram of protein to every six grams of carbs, Endura’s Optimizer is the liquid food you can use during the run or as a recovery drink. There’s 306 calories per 80g serving, which will ensure you keep going stronger for longer on those big days and good flavours to ensure your tastebuds are looked after. Additionally, you get B Vitamins, Calcium and Magnesium because it’s from Endura, which has been a trusted name in sports nutrition for 20 years.

4 - Hoka One One Challenger ATR 4

Don’t leave home without them!

The fourth iteration of Hoka’s revered trail shoe takes cushy Clifton goodness and wraps it in a package that is both comfortable AND durable. A generous fit, good ventilation and aggressive outsole meets THAT midsole to produce a trail shoe that can go long whilst also serving you well on shorter days.

5 - Le Bent Le Definitive ¾ Crew Sock

I love wool. I also love bamboo (mostly because I love pandas). Who would have thought that I could combine both in a pair of socks? Beautifully cushioned and wonderfully low on the odour when your feet are sweaty, these socks sport a look that is inspired by the classic styling of yesteryear and are the perfect accompaniment for trail runners who want to avoid scratches and debris.
