About Neutral Daily Training Running Shoes

A neutral daily trainer is a running shoe optimal for those with a neutral gait. Meaning that when you run your ankle doesn’t roll too far in (pronation) or out (supination). Whereas it’s sister category (Stability Trainers) comes with added support features built into the shoe, such as additional foam slabs to support the arch or motion control guidance, a neutral daily trainer allows your foot to follow its natural motion the whole way through the stride. This doesn’t mean a neutral daily trainer are unstable, just that it doesn’t provide you with extra support.

FIND YOUR FIT:

There’s a few different choices you need to make when picking a neutral daily trainer, two a technical based on your foot shape, and the way you run, and two are down to the way you like a shoe to feel.

Chose your width:

The most important thing to get right in a running shoe is the fit, if you’re in something too tight or too lose you’re going to get blisters and running will suck! Sadly many people don’t even realise they’re wearing the wrong size and width of shoe. At Pace Athletic we stock shoes in Standard width (B for women, D for men), Wide (D for women, 2E for men) and Extra Wide (4E for men). Even within those classifications our brands construct their shoes differently (even within the brand), so we encourage all our customers to use our Size Guide on each product page, or drop into one of our stores to get fitted

Chose your drop:

Each shoe has an “offset” between the amount of foam in the heel and the amount in the forefoot, otherwise known as a shoes “drop”. This drop is designed to get your rolling onto your toes when you push off on each stride. Shoes with a high drop (6mm to 12mm) are great for people who land on their heel (Heel striking) as it promotes this transition through to your toes. Some brands like Altra have a 0mm drop, this is to promote natural foot movement.

Choose your stack:

The amount of foam in the heel of a shoe is referred to as the “stack” of a shoe and is measured in millimetres. The amount of stack determines how much of the ground you’ll feel underfoot. A low stack shoe such as the Altra Escalante will have a lot of ground feel, whereas a HOKA Bondi is famous for pioneering the “Max Stack” category. The stack height is often confused with how soft the shoes midsole feels but this is not always the case. You can have a shoe with a lot of stack, but the foam can feel quite firm, and vice versa. How much feedback you get from the ground is down to preference, some people feel unstable being on top of a lot of foam, whereas others don’t want to feel a thing

Chose your sensation:

At Pace Athletic we classify the sensation you get from a midsole in two categories, Cushioned and Responsive and Springy. Cushioned in the neutral daily trainer category have a pillowy softness when you land and usually feel quite absorbing of your impact. Whereas responsive and springy neutral daily trainers have a bit more pop and liveliness.

SHOP BY BRAND

All our brands have multiple neutral daily trainers available at Pace Athletic, based on the features mentioned above. If you’re after a cushioned shoe that’s lovely and plush have a look at ASICS Nimbus or New Balance 1080. If responsive and springy is your thing, try the Nike Pegasus or the adidas Evo SL.

FAQs

What are neutral daily trainers?

Neutral daily trainers are shoes that allow for a runner’s natural gait to carry them through their stride, from landing through to toe off. They’re best suited to runners whose ankles don’t roll excessively inward or outward when they run, as there are no added support features such as motion control elements or firm ankle wedges like you’d find in stability trainers.

How do I know if neutral daily trainers are right for me?

Take a look at the outsole of your current running shoes (if you have them). If you see excessive wear on either the inside or outside edge, but not both, that can indicate rolling. A more even wear pattern usually suggests neutral daily trainers will work well for you.

You can also have someone film you running from behind, or drop into one of our stores for a professional gait assessment.

Are neutral daily trainers good for walking too?

Yes, absolutely. Neutral daily trainers are comfortable, cushioned, and versatile, which makes them great walking shoes as well.

Can I do faster workouts in neutral daily trainers?

Definitely. You can do everything in a neutral daily trainer, including faster workouts. That said, sessions like tempo runs or intervals can feel a bit more fun and responsive in a dedicated tempo or speed-focused shoe.
